Apple Store EasyPay 2012

Senior Designer

Objective: Empower Apple Store shoppers to easily purchase products and self-checkout using the Apple Store app to scan barcodes and pay with their iTunes account.

Requirements: Redesign a seamless Express Pay experience for Apple retail stores. Collaborate with the Retail team to integrate Express Pay into the in-store launchpad for ease of access and visibility. Provide three types of user feedback—visual, haptic, and audible—for a successful product scan. Design a distinct audible alert that reflects Apple’s brand ethos.

Results: Delivered a user-friendly retail experience that simplified product purchases via barcode scanning. Introduced haptic feedback and audible alerts for the first time in AOS, enhancing user interaction. Designed a melodic, mid-pitch sound that perfectly matched Apple’s brand for successful scan confirmation.

Audio confirmation flow

Moxie leveraged his sound design background to develop the checkout sound. Many explorations were iterated for how the shopper could be confident of a successful scan and transaction. The version that prevailed was an upbeat, mid-pitch, melodic-type sound. You can still hear this sound today, when you purchase items with your iPhone at any Apple retail store, 12 years later.

12 years later…

EasyPay sounds are still part of the redesigned experience. A testament to the work being aligned to Apple’s design language.
