Defining Excellence
QuickBooks 2021 - 2024
Executive Sponsor: Visual and Motion Craft
Objective: Redefine craft profiles and raise the bar for excellence within the Visual and Motion design craft family at Intuit. Establish centers of excellence for Visual and Motion, alongside Content, Research, Design Technology, and Design Operations.
Requirements: Partner with multi-disciplinary craft leaders across the org to define clear career paths, skills training educational material, year-end performance evaluation, and hiring guidelines for use by all design and cross-functional partners at Intuit. Create a community around each craft to foster belonging, provide opportunities for growth, and elevate visibility and awareness of the value that it brings to the organization.
Results: Collaborated with Executive Creative Directors (Intuit, TurboTax, QuickBooks) to establish a new craft family: Brand and Marketing Visual and Motion Design. This allowed for Brand and Marketing Design teams to have a specific design profile with job code and career path. The new design profile enabled leaders to evaluate performance from a non-product perspective.
Defined hiring best practices through the creation of specific job descriptions, portfolio evaluation techniques, design exercises. Nominated representatives who would be available to help teams hire visual or motion designers. Coached Talent Acquisition team on what to evaluate in designer portfolios.
Implemented bi-annual craft calibration sessions to provide guidance on evaluating Visual and Motion designers ahead of mid-year and year-end performance. Bi-weekly meetings to discuss joint craft topics to address and present craft updates to the Design organization monthly all-staff meeting (300+ designers).
Established the first community of Visual and Motion Design. Rallied designers around a plan-on-a-page, outlining design principles, attributes to strive for, and expectations in deliverables. Created a safe-space for Visual and Motion designers to meet and share work, allowing for craft specific feedback, visibility on work in far-off corners of the product to create consistency and cohesion, and opportunities to participate in ideation work and non-product specific creative outlets. This community started with a sentiment survey of “3” and after its first year “7” out of ten.
Communicated visual and motion strategy at CEO staff meetings, presenting work on behalf of QuickBooks, inclusive of marketing and product experiences. Translating CEO and staff feedback for the QuickBooks Design org.
